TONGUE CRIB AND BRACES
Our 8 year old patient would posture her tongue between her upper and lower teeth, stopping her front teeth from moving towards each other. She had a tongue crib glued onto her back teeth which stopped her tongue from posturing forward as well as training her tongue to rest behind her upper or lower front teeth. She then had braces as a teenager to perfect her bite and the alignment of her teeth.

Ceramic braces combined with upper and lower jaw surgery was used to broaden our patient’s smile, correct his gum levels, straighten his teeth, correct his bite as well as his improve his facial appearance, profile and self esteem.

Our patient was very concerned about how he was being treated by his dentist and seeked our help. We removed his metal braces and replaced them with ceramic braces. Jaw surgery was also used to move his upper jaw forward and his lower jaw back. The effect was a beautiful broad smile and a harmonious profile.

Published Research & Orthodontic Expertise
Early in my career, one of my proudest achievements was having my three year research thesis published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine (2002), still today one of the world’s leading respiratory medicine journals.
My study, Effect of Vertical Dimension on Efficacy of Oral Appliance Therapy in Obstructive Sleep Apnea, explored how jaw position affects the effectiveness and comfort of oral appliances used to treat sleep apnea.
At the time, practitioners around the world were making these oral appliances in different ways, without clear evidence on which approach worked best.
My findings showed that while both designs were effective, oral appliances without mouth opening were significantly more comfortable. A discovery that has since influenced how oral appliances are made and manufactured globally.
More than two decades later, my work continues to be cited internationally. My research and training has taught me to using only proven, evidence based approaches in my orthodontic care. I continue to work closely with other dental specialists to achieve the best outcomes for patients with sleep apnea.
For me, a career in orthodontics is about helping people not only achieve a confident smile but also improve their overall health and quality of life.
